Spring Renewal: New Worlds, Old Wisdom. Nelson Mandela’s My African Stories

This month, instead of choosing a book about renewal directly, I wanted to share something that feels like renewal in a different way.

I’m recommending Nelson Mandela’s My African Stories, a collection of traditional African short stories gathered from across the continent—South Africa, Tanzania, Namibia, Botswana, Zimbabwe, Congo, Nigeria, Kenya, Morocco, and more. The stories are illustrated by African artists, and each one carries the tone, texture, and imagination of its place of origin.

Mandela compiled this book with a simple and powerful intention: that African children would grow up listening to the stories of their own ancestors, their own cultures, their own lands. There is something deeply meaningful about that—to preserve voice, imagination, and history through storytelling.

I inherited this book from my father. He was a thirsty reader and had a unique instinct for choosing books that carried substance.

He loved this one—not only because of the beauty and innocence of the stories, but because of his admiration for Nelson Mandela: his life, his integrity, his legacy. I still remember conversations with him while he held this book in his hands, speaking about Mandela with respect and gratitude. Every time I see it on my shelf, I think of those moments.

There is something refreshing about short stories, especially in this season. You move from princesses to hyenas, from clever rabbits to lions, from villages to vast landscapes, every few pages. Each story is its own world. There’s lightness, wisdom, humor, and depth—all at once.

Spring renewal doesn’t always come from self-improvement or deep analysis. Sometimes it comes from stepping into a different world, even briefly. From allowing your imagination to stretch. From remembering that storytelling is one of the oldest ways we make sense of life.

This book feels alive. It feels colorful, textured, and grounded in place. It reminds me that renewal can also mean reconnecting with culture, with ancestry, with imagination.

And on a personal note—thank you, Dad, for this gift.

If you’re looking for something different this season—something vibrant, layered, and deeply human—this is a beautiful place to begin.
